<p>Knowing what nutrients are and how much of each is recommended  for optimal health is important. However, this information is not always  helpful in choosing a healthy diet. Because of the wide variety of  foods available today, there are many combinations of foods that make up  a healthy diet. Virtually any food can be part of a healthy diet as  long as it is balanced with other food choices throughout the day or  week to meet but not exceed dietary needs.</p>
<p>A healthy diet provides  the right number of calories to keep your weight in the desirable  range; the proper balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fat choices;  plenty of water; and sufficient but not excessive amounts of essential  vitamins and minerals. <span id="more-146"></span>How this translates into specific food choices  depends on individual needs and preferences, but in general, a healthy  diet is rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables; contains the right  types of fats; and is low in added sugars. Choosing this diet does not  mean people need to give up their favorite foods. But it does require  them to think about the variety and balance of foods.</p>
<p>Variety is  very important to a healthy diet because different foods provide  different nutrients. Making a variety of choices from within each food  group is as important as choosing the right amounts from each food  group. For example, strawberries are a fruit that provides vitamin C but  little vitamin A, whereas apricots are a good a source of vitamin A,  but provide fewer vitamins C. A diet that includes only strawberries  will provide plenty of vitamin C, but may be lacking in vitamin A.</p>
<p>Balance  is also part of a healthy diet. Balancing the diet means selecting  foods that complement each other. This requires considering a food&#8217;s  nutrient density. Foods that are low in nutrient density, such as baked  goods, snack foods, and sodas, should be balanced with nutrient-dense  choices, such as salads, fruit, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products. A  meal that consists of a burger, fries, and a soda, can be balanced by  eating a salad, brown rice, and chicken at the next meal.</p>
<p>A varied  diet that balances nutrient-poor choices with nutrient-dense ones can  help most people meet their nutrient needs. For those who have increased  needs or limited food choices, fortified foods are available. These  foods contain added nutrients and include products such as  calcium-fortified orange juice and iron fortified breakfast cereals. In  some cases, vitamin and mineral supplements can be helpful, but these  should be used with caution to avoid consuming a toxic amount.</p>

<p>Health is something very valuable. A lot people have asthma. My daughter, 41 years, included. She has suffered from attacks for many years. Recently I encounter three natural remedies that I asked my daughter to try. I have not yet received a report on these, so I would like to pass them on to you. Here is the first one.</p>
<p>Boswellia</p>
<p>Boswellia, an herb, is known for its anti-inflammatory abilities and its usefulness in reduces the effects of bronchitis, asthma, cough, laryngitis, and fever. It comes from the resin of a tree in India and made into a pill or cream. It is best known for use in arthritis.</p>
<p>Recommended dose is: 150mg three times a day.</p>
<p>Yamoa<span id="more-142"></span></p>
<p>Yamoa is an herbal powder treatment for Asthma, which is derived from the bark of an African gum tree. It is available in capsule and has been typically used to help asthma.<br />
It has a good history of helping asthma sufferers.</p>
<p>Minor Blue Dragon formula</p>
<p>The Minor Blue Dragon is a Chinese herbal formula. Another name for it is xiao-qing-long-tang, or XQLT.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a blend of eight herbal medicines used to treat asthma for centuries in Asia</p>
<p>The XQLT formula has been used effectively for bronchial asthma for centuries and it is said to have an even more powerful bronchodilator effect than prescription drugs.</p>
<p>This formulation contains ephedra, which has been banned in the US in diet formulas. However, ephedra in this formula is considered safe, since the formula only contains around 15% of this herb. The other ingredients in XQLT are paeonia alba, cinnamon, pinellia, ginger, schisandar, asarum, and glycyrrhiza.</p>
<p>Nutritional Supplements That Help Reduce Asthma</p>
<p>Antioxidants</p>
<p>In addition to the above herbs it is also important to take a good supply of antioxidants &#8211; especially vitamins A, C, and E, carotenoids, and selenium. Taking antioxidants helps to reduce the irritating effects of airborne free radicals, which can activate an asthma attack.</p>
<p>Magnesium</p>
<p>Magnesium has been shown to reduce the risk of developing asthma and might also be helpful in reducing asthma. Magnesium is also good for asthmatics because it helps to dilate the bronchioles. Also, make sure that plenty of water is drunk daily, which thins mucus. The recommended dosage of magnesium is 200-600 mg/day.</p>
<p>MSM</p>
<p>MSM has also proven useful for asthma aside from being beneficial for arthritis, allergies, fatigue, back pain, sinusitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, autoimmune diseases, and many other conditions. Start with 2000mg of MSM per day but be sure to take 50 to 150 micrograms of molybdenum daily since MSM needs molybdenum to activate it properly.</p>
<p>I was able to find a product that already has the proper molybdenum in the MSM, which makes it convenient to take just one pill. Go to Google and put in the words &#8220;MSM molybdenum&#8221; and you will find some web sites that sell this MSM combination.</p>

<p>Plant sterols. Beta-sitosterol and other plant sterols have a chemical structure similar to that of cholesterol, which enables them to reduce the absorption of cholesterol from the intestine. Several studies have found that plant sterols can lower cholesterol levels by an average of 6 to 8 percent. Take sterol supplements 2 to 3 times a day, products labeled plant sterols, phytosterols, or beta-sitosterol.</p>
<p>Niacin: This form of vitamin B-3 has been known since the 1950&#8242;s to reduce cholesterol levels. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration for lowering cholesterol, it is sold both by prescription and over the counter. As effective as niacin is, it triggers the release of histamine, which often will turn the skin beet red and tingly for about an hour. If you keep taking niacin, the intense flushing episodes should eventually ease. Start at 100 mg. once or twice a day and work up to 500 to 1,000 mg. three times a day.</p>
<p>Coenzyme Q10: People who must take statin drugs should also take 100 to 200 mg. of CoQ10 a day because statins can deplete the body&#8217;s natural supply.</p>

<p>Fish Oil &#8220;Omega 3&#8243; Supplements: Contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) &#8211; both essential dietary fats that boost HDL. They&#8217;re also potent blood thinners so they prevent clotting, and they help to regulate heart rhythm.</p>

Walk the mall, play with the kids in the park, or join a gym; these types of social activities not only keep you active but they keep you involved with the rest of the world and that is just plain good for your psyche.</p>

One of his quotes is, &#8220;If you can see it, and believe it, you can achieve it.&#8221; That sets the tone for how you should look at aging. Believe you are young, keep your mind active with work, reading, and puzzles. Keeping the brain sharp is a full time job but it can be fun. Try building new neural pathways by changing hands when you brush your teeth. Learn to throw with your opposite hand or play kick the can with your non dominate foot. Those very easy activities can help your brain build some new connections and that keeps your mind sharp.</p>
<p>What you eat probably has the most effect on your anti-aging fight. A well balanced diet that is full of fruits and vegetables is a good start, but as we age sometimes we need to supplement our diet. Some of the supplements we need as we get older include antioxidants to fight the free radicals that cause aging and some cancers, fish oil and omega 3 fatty acid supplements to keep our brains, our hearts and our skin in tip top condition, and calcium to help keep your bones strong.
